HOW TO GET TO THE ZUGSPITZE

If you want to get married on the Zugspitze, you can easily get there by public transport or by car. The nearest major town to the Zugspitze is Garmisch-Partenkirchen. There or directly in Grainau, which lies at the foot of the Zugspitze, you can look for beautiful accommodation.

TRAVELING TO THE ZUGSPITZE BY CAR

You can get to Garmisch-Partenkirchen for your wedding by car without any problems. You can simply follow the A95 to Oberau and then take the highway to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. If you have decided on accommodation in Grainau, you can simply drive through Garmisch-Partenkirchen and follow the signs to Grainau.

ANREISE MIT DEN ARRIVAL BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT

You can also easily reach the foot of the Zugspitze by public transport. The best connection is at Munich Central Station. From there you can take a train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. With Deutsche Bahn, you can travel directly from Munich Central Station to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. If you have opted for accommodation in Grainau, you can take the bus or the cog railroad from Garmisch-Partenkirchen station to Grainau. Both the bus and the cog railroad leave directly from the train station. You can find the bus and cog railway connections here.

UP THE ZUGSPITZE BY CABLE CAR OR COG RAILROAD

If you want to get married on the Zugspitze, all you have to do now is get to the highest mountain in Germany. You have two options for getting to the Zugspitze.

TAKE THE GONDOLA TO THE ZUGSPITZE

If you are not afraid of heights, you can park your car directly at the Eibsee car park and take the gondola up to the Zugspitze from there. Once there, you have to take another gondola to get to the Skiplato. This is because the registry office on the Zugspitze is not directly on the summit, but in the ‘Haus Sonnalpin’ in the Skiplato of the Zugspitze. A gondola ticket with ascent and descent currently costs €68. As a wedding photographer in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, I always recommend that my couples buy their tickets in advance to avoid waiting times. You can buy tickets at the ticket counter at Garmisch-Partenkirchen train station or at the valley station at the Eibsee car park. Tickets can also be purchased online HERE.

TAKE THE COGWHEEL RAILWAY UP THE ZUGSPITZE

If you’re afraid of heights, I can only recommend taking the cog railway to the Zugspitze for your wedding. You can take the railway directly from the station in Garmisch-Partenkirchen or at one of the many stops on the Zugspitze. The last half hour of the journey takes you through a tunnel and ends at the Skiplato, where the wedding ceremony on the Zugspitze takes place. The prices are the same as for the cable car: €68. REGISTRATION FOR THE REGISTRY OFFICE ON THE ZUGSPITZE

If you have decided in favour of a wedding on the Zugspitze, all you have to do now is find a registry office date on the Zugspitze. Weddings only take place once a month on a Wednesday on the Zugspitze. The dates are very popular and usually sell out quickly. Applications are accepted at the earliest six months before the respective date.

COUPLE SHOOT / WEDDING PICTURES ON THE ZUGSPITZE

A couple shoot on the Zugspitze really is the perfect opportunity. I always recommend taking the wedding pictures on the Skiplato and not on the summit of the Zugspitze. There you have much more space, fewer people and unspoilt nature. Everything around the summit is fenced in and it’s not really suitable for wedding pictures. Alternatively, the Eibsee would also not be far away for a couple shoot / elopement.
